Brazen robbers pounce on Baywest Mall shop, make off with goods

The Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth on Sunday re-assured tenants and shoppers that their safety remains a top priority after a robbery incident that occured on Sunday morning at one of the shops located within the mall's premises.

“Just before 9am on Sunday, four men entered the Side Step store on the Upper Level at Baywest Mall," described Baywest Mall general manager, Troy Zunckel.

"As Side Step staff members were preparing to open for the day’s trading, they were interrupted by the robbers. At this stage, the mall cannot confirm whether the robbers were armed or not."

Zunckel said that the robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of goods, including the staff’s cellphones.

"The mall security team heard the staff members’ calls for help from the back office, where the robbers had locked them in, and immediately alerted the police.

"No shoppers were in the store at the time and no staff were injured during the incident. The robbers fled the scene in a black Volkswagen Golf," he said.

"Our security team is working closely with the SAPS and have handed over the relevant CCTV footage to investigators. Due to the ongoing police investigation, we are unable to provide further details to the media.

"The mall works closely with the SAPS on high-visibility patrols and has an SAPS officer stationed at the mall’s info desk. Baywest Mall would like to reiterate that the safety and well-being of our tenants and shoppers is our top priority.”
