Uitenhage man expected in court for illegal firearm possession

Police officers from the Operational Command Centre in the Uitenhage Cluster continued to clamp down on criminal activities on Tuesday night and managed to arrest a 23-year-old male suspect, who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Livingstone Circle, Jubilee Park, Uitenhage.

"The 23-year-old male was detained on the charges and he is due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate's Court on Thursday, 21 September 2017," said police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

"The immediate action of the police ensured that yet another illegal firearm was removed from the community that might have been used for the commission of a serious or violent crime(s)."

Captain Swart said that the firearm will be sent for ballistics analysis.

Uitenhage Deputy Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll lauded the members for the arrest and said: “Members from the South African Police Service will continue to intensify their actions to rid the streets of this Cluster of all illegal guns”.

The South African Police Service wants to encourage the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime and they appeal to the community to provide valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects.
