Motherwell taxi owner gunned down in his lounge, suspect on the run

Police have launched an investigation after a 57-year-old Port Elizabeth-based taxi owner was shot dead on Tuesday night just before 9pm.

However, according to the police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, police believe that Lulamile Welcome Mafani's death was not taxi industry related.

"An unknown male came to his home in Indwe Street, NU3, Motherwell, asking to speak to Mr Mafani.

"His wife called him, and after entering the lounge area from his bedroom, a short exchange of words took place, after which the unknown suspect produced a firearm and shot Mr Mafani several times, before running away from the scene," he described.

Mafani died on the scene.

"He is a taxi owner, but the motive for the incident is not related to the taxi industry," Capt Beetge added.

"It is suspected that the argument was about a personal jealousy issue."
