K-Day hype dominated sports fixtures with children from St Andrew’s Prep

The K-Day hype dominated last week’s sports fixtures with children from St Andrew’s Prep and Kingswood College competing in 32 fixtures.

The fixtures kicked off on Wednesday afternoon with the successful Grade 1 Netball games. Players competed in mixed team games. This was followed on Thursday by a series of Bondel Rugby activities involving all Grade 1 boys from both Kingswood College and St Andrew’s Preparatory School. The girls, boys, staff and parents appreciated the opportunity of the children getting early exposure to netball and rugby.

The chilly conditions on Friday did not dampen the spirits of the netball and boys hockey players. The junior girls, despite the challenging windy conditions, displayed good netball skills. St Andrew’s Preparatory won the (Gr 3) U9A match 6 – 3 but lost the (Gr 3) U9B 1 – 2 and (Gr 2/3) U9C 1 – 3. The Grade 2 (U8A) tied their match.

On Friday competitive boys hockey matches were played on Webster Field by all teams. Both schools were able to field thirteen teams.  The (1st XI) U13A match did not disappoint the enthusiastic crowd, which witnessed five quality goals. St Andrew’s Preparatory won 4 – 1.

The JP girls were out early on Saturday morning on Webster Field and Rhodes Astro. The in-form St Andrew’s JP (Gr 3) U9A side were too strong for their counterparts as they won 10 – 0.  The other junior team matches were closely contested; The St Andrew’s Preparatory School won the U9C 2 – 1 and U8A 3 – 1. The U9 B drew 1 all and the U8B played in a goalless match.

In the later part of Saturday, the attention switched on to the much-anticipated rugby matches on Fairlawn Fields. The fixture, though it was no different to any of our other schools fixtures, carried a lot of hype.  The Grade 2s (U8) played in a triangular fixture involving Bedford School. The potential City Lords and Lower Field stars sized each other up in the highly entertaining games with an exhibit of great running rugby, hand-offs, cover defence and tackles. The excitement of Grade 2 rugby did set up a good tone of what was to follow for the rest of the morning. In the remainder of the fixtures, St Andrew’s Preparatory won 4 matches and Kingswood College 3. Apart from the U9B and U13C matches where St Andrew’s Preparatory won by bigger margins, there was nothing much in between the sides. In a seesaw encounter where the lead kept on changing, Kingwood won the U9A match 26 – 14 and went on to out - smart their peers in the U11A (3 – 0) and 2nd XV (26 – 14). St Andrew’s Preparatory 1st XV needed Aza Nonxuba’s match winning try in the 50th  minute of the game to win 19 – 12.

The past weekend created the opportunity for all children who were healthy and fit to play, interact with peers and test one’s skills against players of equal abilities or levels.
