Alleged hijacker in a PE hospital after crashing car into bakkie and truck

An alleged hijacking suspect, approx. 21 years old, is under police guard at a Port Elizabeth hospital after the alleged hijacked vehicle he was driving was involved in a three-car collision early on Friday morning.

According to police information, at about 07:00 on Friday morning, a red VW Polo was hijacked in Parliament Street, Central, Port Elizabeth.

"A 21-year-old complainant alleged that she was hijacked by four males," described police spokesperson, Capt Jihan Rheeder.

"At about 07:15, it is alleged that the driver of the stolen vehicle lost control of the vehicle and bumped to a lamp post in Targetkloof and then collided with a white Nissan vehicle, which was turning right into River Road.

"The red VW Polo also collided with a truck traveling in the opposite direction."

The truck driver did not sustain any injures while the occupants (3) of the Nissan vehicle was treated by paramedics on the scene.

The driver (suspect) of the VW Polo was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Capt Rheeder said that police are investigating a case of hijacking and reckless/negligent driving.
