Tata gets serious with new Bolt

Having initially focused on the budget motoring section since arriving in South Africa 11 years ago, Indian auto giant Tata has now shifted its attention in becoming a bigger player with the launch of various new models over the coming months, the first being the all-new Bolt supermini.

Introduced in its homemarket earlier this year, the Bolt replaces the Indica Vista hatchback and Manza sedan and also sees it adopting forced induction for the first.

Featuring the marque’s new “Humanity Line” styling language, the Bolt will initially be offered in four models made out of two trim levels and a single drivetrain option.

Available in both hatch and sedan body styles, the entry level XMS includes a five-inch infotainment display with USB / Aux input and Bluetooth, colour coded bumpers and door mirrors, black leather interior, multi-function steering wheel, electric windows all around, 14-inch steel wheels, electric mirrors, auto lock/unlock doors, dual front airbags, stability control and ABS with EBD.

Capping off the range, the flagship XT adds climate control, projector type headlights, touchscreen media interface with voice recognition and 15-inch alloy wheels. LED daytime running lights are also offered only on the sedan.

Up front, the Bolt comes powered with Tata’s brand new 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged petrol engine that churns out 66 kW and 140 N.m of torque. A five-speed manual gearbox drives the front wheels although an automated manual transmission (AMT) is expected to arrive next year. The Fiat sourced 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine available in India, is however a no-no for South Africa.

Although fuel consumption remains unknown, the Bolt also features Tata’s Multi-Drive system that allows the drive to choice from three settings depending on preference. These include City, Eco and Sport, the latter being the default setting, that adjusts throttle response and steering feedback.

A five year / 100 000 km warranty and two year / 30 000 km service plan is standard on all models.
