Protest continue despite abolishment of proposed increase

Rubber bullets and tear gas have continued ringing outside the Union Buildings in Pretoria moments after President Jacob Zuma announced that the proposed six percent increase in tuition fees for 2016, would be scrapped.

According to the latest reports, protesting Wits, Tswane University of Technology and University of Johannesburg students, pelted police Nyala’s with rocks and even set fire to a portable toilet as many others returned to their respective campuses.

In the Cape Town, police have maintained a sizeable presence amidst reports that students from the University of the Western Cape, plan on taking their action to the Cape Town International Airport, having earlier cast doubt as to whether government would stand by its word.

Earlier, protesting Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NNMU) students handed over a memorandum of understanding to Eastern Cape Premier, Phumulo Masualle, after staging a peaceful march from the university’s Second Avenue campus to City Hall.
