MEC Tikana-Gxothiwe says accused taxi driver might lose license

Bhisho - Eastern Cape Transport, Safety&Liaison MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe, says her department will not hesitate to exercise its right to terminate the Public Transport Operating Licences of the taxi-man, accused of kidnapping and murdering his ex-girlfriend at Chicken Farm outside East London.

This comes as the rate of Gender Based Violence cases and Femicide, in particular, continue to cause wreak havoc in the country, prompting President Cyril Ramaphosa to describe the scourge as “a brutality that defies comprehension” and “an epidemic, as much as COVID-19 is.”.

The suspect, Welcome Madoda Yose (61), made his first court appearance on Wednesday on charges of kidnapping and murdering Lindelwa Peni (43).

The suspect is expected back on court again on the 23rd of June, 23rd for a bail application.

Tikana-Gxothiwe has called on the criminal justice system to leave no room for perpetrators of these horrendous crimes to walk free, be it on technicality or otherwise.

“We stand firmly behind President Ramaphosa’s call that perpetrators of violence against women and children must receive sentences that fit the horrific crimes they commit and addition to that, we would not even want them to be released on bail, especially when there’s compelling evidence against the suspect, as is the case in the Chicken Farm murder case,” said Tikana-Gxothiwe.

The Transport MEC, also said that the department will take a cue from the court proceedings on its next move on the suspects Public Transport Operating License.
