“Time to push the reset button on Makana” - DA
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape has called on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Pravin Gordhan, to dissolve the council of the troubled Makana Local Municipality.
Speaking in a statement, Makana Constituency leader Andrew Whitfield said the continuing financial problems, lack of service delivery and recent “illegal” appointment of Nomhle Gaga as mayor, needs to be addressed with immediate effect.
“After years of maladministration, political infighting and chronic service delivery failure it is clear that the current administration and political leadership of the ANC are not prepared to put the interests of the people before their own,” he said.
“The ANC have driven this once prosperous and proud municipality into the ground while protecting and promoting the interests of a closed crony clique of cadres who have ‘feasted’ at the expense of the people. It is time to hit the reset button on a broken Makana Council”.
Gaga, who was appointed to the position on August 28th in place of sacked mayor Zamuxolo Peter, officially resigned from the post on Tuesday, citing irregularities in her being chosen as the main reason.
