Police monitoring Uitenhage protest - drivers warned to use alternative routes
Port Elizabeth police were still monitoring the situation in Langa, Uitenhage, at around midday on Friday after running battles with residents. Drivers have been warned to avoid Meduna Road and North West Street in the area and to use alternative routes.
In the morning, the protesters pelted vehicles with stones and even set a bakkie alight. Tyres were still burning at the time of reporting.
On Thursday evening, the protesters blocked roads and torched a truck and trailer as well as an earthworks excavator.
Police managed to restore calm around 8pm.
