Exciting news for the Eastern Cape film industry

Eastern Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, is expected on Friday to lead a strong delegation of officials from the Eastern Cape Development Corporation and Eastern Cape Provincial Arts and Culture Council to a meeting with the National Film and Video Foundation.

On the agenda for the meeting, which will happen at the Radisson Blu Hotel, in Port Elizabeth,  are the following

  • Establishment of a Film Centre in the Eastern Cape Province, and
  • The Development and Support of Film makers in the Province.

A study commissioned by the National Film and Video Foundation in 2017 found that the film industry alone contributed R5.4 billion to the country’s economy in 2016 with more than 21 000 jobs created benefiting young people between the ages of 25 to 39.

MEC Mabuyane said: “The Film Industry is a cornerstone of the Entertainment Economy and the Eastern Cape Province has for a long time produced brilliant actors and actresses who had to move to Gauteng to showcase their talent. Part of the reason for that has been lack of infrastructure and effort to establish a Film Industry in the Province. We want to do that now.”
