Garden Route ATM card thief possibly linked to similar case in Jbay
A 40-year old man from Cape Town is expected to remain behind bars after the George Magistrate's Court postponed his case, involving the possession of an illegal ATM card reading device, to September 10th.
Local media reports that Sabello Dyariwe was taken into custody on July 30th after reportedly stealing a bank card at an ATM inside the Garden Route Mall, before withdrawing R2 000 and R3 000 from the account. It is believed be obtained the PIN after appearing over the victim’s shoulder while a transaction was being done.
“The accused was being monitored by the police when he walked to his vehicle in the parking area at approximately 17:00, after which he turned around to return to the mall,” Police spokesperson Captain Bernadine Steyn was quoted as saying.
“He noticed approaching police members and took a card reader out of his pocket. He attempted to damage the device by throwing it on the ground and stepping on it”.
Steyn said police are also investigating Dyariwe’s alleged involvement in a similar case earlier this year, where R2 000 was taken from an account belonging to a person from Jeffrey's Bay who had reported the card as stolen.
