“Tshabalala has no degree”- DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that a commissioned background check on controversial South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) chairperson, Ellen Tshabalala, has shown that she never obtained a BCom degree from Unisa as stated on her CV.

“The DA enlisted the services of Managed Integrity Evaluation to check Ms Tshabalala's qualifications against the National Qualifications Register, a process referred to as background screening,” DA MP Gareth Davis said.

According to the screening’s results, Tshabalala had registered for the degree with the student code 0658-212-5 in 1996, but never completed it. No mention was made of Tshabalala claiming to have also achieved a diploma on Labour relations from Unisa, as this does “not form part of National Qualifications Register,” Davis added.

Last Thursday, Tshabalala obtained an interim interdict in the Western Cape High Court, barring an enquiry into misrepresentation of her qualifications. The matter is set to be tabled before on November 3rd.

“The DA will present the results of the screening process as new evidence at the parliamentary inquiry into Ms Tshabalala’s qualifications when it resumes,” Davis said. A SABC spokesperson has declined to comment on the DA’s findings.
