Dutywa police appeal for leads after elderly headman and elderly woman killed

Dutywa police are seeking community's assistance in apprehending suspects for the murders of two elderly people over the weekend.

"It is alleged that a 71-year-old man was shot and murdered on Sunday, at about 19h00, at Hlezuphondo Locality, Thaleni Village, Dutywa," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The identity of the deceased is being withheld until all his relatives have been informed about his murder."

He said that it is alleged that there was a knock at the door and the 71-year-old  man went to open the door.

"Shots were fired at him and he was hit on his upper body. He died at the scene."

The motive for the murder is not known.  

"The suspect/s ran away. No one has been arrested. The deceased was a sub-headman of the village."

Elderly woman also killed

In a separate murder, an 85-year-old woman was found burnt to death on Sunday, at about 14h00 at her home, which is at Esikhobeni Village, Dutywa.

"The deceased was last seen alive on Saturday. When the relatives could not see her, they decided to go to her house and found her burnt to death," said Captain Manatha.

"The deceased was staying with learners, who were renting one of her rooms. The motive for the murder is not known."

He said that no one has been arrested.

"The identity of the deceased is still being withheld as some of her relatives have not been informed of the murder," Captain Manatha said.
