Unique Nelson Mandela Bay International Museum’s Day offering this Saturday

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, South End Museum, celebrate International Museum’s Day

Port Elizabeth - The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, in conjunction with the South End Museum, will celebrate International Museum’s Day on Saturday with a walk-through of remnants of South End of old and a reminiscing award-winning vinyl exhibition entitled When dust settles.

"The event starts from 09:00 until 12:30 on 18 May with the walk-through led by South End Museum's Colin Abrahams and closes with the exhibition of 2018 Standard Bank Young Artist, Igshaan Adams, at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum as well as tea and eats," the municipality said.

"The  combination of the tour and the exhibition serves as a reminder of the past.  The ruins of St Peter’s church are witness to a lost community while Adams uses old pieces of vinyl to reminisce about his upbringing on the Cape Flats.

"The vinyl, which covers the walls and floor of the Art Museum, was sourced from various residents living in the Cape Flat areas such as Bonteheuwel and Khayelitsha."

It added that the vinyl, like the Ruins of St Peter’s Church, has a powerfully nostalgic effect and reminds us days gone by.

International Museum’s Day is a global day celebration that takes place annually around or on 18 May. This year’s theme is “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition”.

"The role of Museums in society is changing. Museums keep reinventing themselves in their quest for becoming more interactive, audience focused, community oriented, flexible, adaptable and mobile centres," the municipality said.

"They have become cultural hubs functioning as platforms where creativity combines with knowledge and where visitors can also co-create, share and interact."
