Ramaphosa again expected to address the nation regarding the COVID-19 lockdown

Port Elizabeth - South Africans will be glued to their TVs when President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday again addresses the nation regarding the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown.

This will be his second nation address this week after another address on Tuesday night, in which he announced a R500 billion relief plan aimed at cushioning the blow of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy and communities.

Ramaphosa has been urged to loosen the lockdown in order to save livelihoods and businesses that are currently not operating due to the nationwide lockdown. However, complicating the situation is the continuing rise in infections - he hinted on a phased lifting of the lockdown in address on Tuesday.

South Africa on Wednesday had 3 635 confirmed COVID-19 cases, as announced by the Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize.

This is an increase of 170 cases from Tuesday night.

In a statement, Mkhize confirmed that seven more COVID-19 related deaths had been recorded, bringing the total number to 65.

Five of the deaths occurred in the Western Cape, while two were recorded in KwaZulu-Natal.

To date, South Africa has conducted 133 774 COVID-19 tests, with 6 868 of these done in the last 24 hours.

The provincial breakdown of infections is as follows:

  • Gauteng: 1 224

  • Free State: 106
